The word ‘Mala’, when translated from Hindi to English means garland, which is a contraption of various flowers arranged on a string to form a wraith. Therefore, the Varmala ceremony involves the exchange of the Mala- garland between the couple to symbolize agreement and love in preparation for the upcoming wedding.
From time immemorial, the Mala would be made up of various brightly colored flowers each of them symbolizing various desirable emotions such as love, happiness and peace. Some of these flowers include Roses, Marigolds, Orchids, Carnations, among others. Putting the flowers together in a wraith to form the garland symbolizes unity and oneness.
A modern variation of the Mala may include a few currency notes to wish the new couple good luck and prosperity. Apart from just being found in the garland, the flowers can also be used to decorate the hall being used for the venue as well as the Mandap where the bride and groom will stay during the ceremony.

The husband-to-be walks to the door of the venue where the wedding takes place and goes to the Bride’s mother who is already waiting for him. She spreads some tilak on the groom and carries out the aarti, which is believe to neutralize the effect of any evil eyes gazing at him.
After being ‘sanitized’ by his prospective mother-in-law, the groom goes to the Mandap (a tent where the bride and groom stay during the ceremony) to await his bride. Upon the wife’s arrival, she initiates the exchange by trying to place the garland around the groom’s neck, but some friends and family attempt to prevent her from doing this. This is usually a highlight of the Varmala as its playful nature lightens the mood and creates a jolly atmosphere for the wedding.
After the garland exchange has been successfully completed, the bride and groom sit together under the Mandap and the wedding ceremony commences.
