Ideally, according to Hindu tradition, the couple are supposed to be fasting on the day of their wedding ceremony. Although some couples do not adhere to this tradition due to various circumstances, it is an important requirement. The first food they receive is Kansar, a sweet made in India from crushed wheat, clarified butter and sugar. The sweet is given to the couple by the bride’s mother. As the ceremony draws to an end, the bride and groom feed each other their first meal as husband and wife just before the process ofAshirvad, which means receiving blessings from family and friends.
According to tradition, the KansarBhakshan requires the groom to place his arm around the bride’s shoulder as he feeds her. This part of the wedding rites often attract a lot of laughter as it involves a display of affection. Often, the bride’s mother is accompanied by the groom’s mother in offering the Kansar (sweets) to the couple. The shared meal is meant to depict that the couple must now live a life where everything each of them has belongs to the both of them.
