Mandap | Indian Wedding Ceremony

Mandap Introduction

Mandap, in Hindi, means ‘a covered structure with pillars.’ So, going by this meaning, the Mandap is used as the altar for Indian weddings – only for Jain and Hindu ceremonies. The wooden structure is usually decorated with floral fixtures and bells, and it is the stage where the union of the couple takes place. Four pillars are holding a Mandap, representing the four parents involved.

Mandap Ceremony

At the end of the Varmala, the couple moves on to seat on the stage, and this kickstarts the wedding ceremony proper. As a symbol of honor, both the groom and the bride seats on royal chairs, with their parents right by their sides. There is usually a divine fire, traditionally placed between the couple. The Priest uses this fire during the ceremony while taking hymns from the Vedas.

Mandap Decorations

The stage is usually decorated to the delight of everyone, with the pillars stylishly adorned with flowers. The stage, or Mandap, is positioned such that it is a bit higher than the regular ground. This ensures that everyone at the wedding can see the proceedings right from their seats. Other adornments you will find on the stage include garlands of banana and mango leaves, statues of God, water pots, and different attractive flowers. Just beside the sacred fire are religious offerings, which will be offered by the Priest and the couple as the ceremony progresses.
