This is when the bride will show up for the first time at the wedding. The bride may prefer to meet the groom before entering the wedding venue, or at the end of the Baraat. However, the official arrival of the bride to the Mandap is what the KanyaAagaman is all about. Even with both the bride and groom in the venue, they cannot see each other, just yet. A white cloth is used to block them from each other.
The literal translation of KanyanAagaman is ‘the arrival of the bride.’ The bride doesn’t move to the Mandap all by herself; her maternal aunt and uncle usually flank her. Escorting the bride to the Mandap indicates that the family of the bride’s mother consent to the wedding. It is also possible to have sisters, friends, and cousins join the bride as she moves to the Mandap, however, this depends on the Indian origin of the family.
The conventional mode of entrance in weddings is involved the couple ‘walking down the aisle.’ However, when it comes to Hindu marriages, the bride is escorted to the hall in a Doli – a small carriage, which is usually carried by the male relatives from the family of the bride.
Once she gets to the Mandap, the Priest begins the Varmala rituals.
